Kosher Airport Food

A few months ago I was reading one of my favorite message boards, FlyerTalk, and I came across a post about kosher offerings at different airports. As a travel junky, and someone who keeps kosher, I was intrigued. It turns out that there is a kosher vendor at the Jet Blue terminal at JFK airport in New York, but nothing at Newark, where I tend to fly in and out of most when in the area. I know to always bring my own snacks, but sometimes with delays or when unforeseen hunger sets in, I wish there was something more than chips and a coke.

So I wrote a polite email to the Port Authority of New York asking for a solution. Then….nothing for 3 months.

Two weeks ago, I got this reply:

Thank you for your idea on selling Kosher food in Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport. I apologize for the delay in responding.
We are always looking for opportunities for our customers to enjoy the food they like while traveling through our airports. I have taken the liberty of forwarding your idea to the Terminal C concession manager for consideration.

Continental Airlines has a contract with Westfield Concessions to provide the food and beverage and retail concessions in Terminal C.

Again, thank you for your thoughts and we appreciate your ideas as we continue to find ways to improve the airport experience for our customers. The Port Authority of NY and NJ

The conversation has proceeded since then. The Port Authority and Westfield Concessions are looking for a solution to help out all the Kosher food eating people out there.

I remembered this post, and I am right now sitting in the Jet Blue terminal in JFK so I re read it and looked up where the food is. Even though we brought….always good to have extra.
    Thanks again…many months later.

I appreciate this post as I will be traveling tomorrow from Miami to Tel Aviv, via JFK with my husband and 4 sons and with a 4 hour lay-over at JFK it would be great to find some decent food. We will check out the Jet Blue terminal and the offerings. It would have been helpful if someone here had posted what kind of kosher food is available as we are vegetarian.
I have not been to JFK in many years and don’t know the lay of the land so is the Jet Blue terminal easily accessible? I guess with 4 hours to spare, we have time!
I will do my best to update this blog with the answers to my own questions to help out other wayward kosher travelers!

    Esti,

So glad you happened upon this post. Since it’s been a while from when this was originally posted, I hope you can update us on what is currently available Kosher at JFK.

    Have a good trip.

Well after much searching and no luck through the JFK website I found other blogs with a much more informative post about this kosher food. They are not vendors – they are VENDING MACHINES. There is a big difference.

    Here is the link:

There are other blogs that had the photo and detailed information as well. Now this blog can be updated and be of greater service to its readers.

    Thanks.

I have actually tasted the food from these machines at KosherFest last year. They are not bad, definitely better than no Kosher food, which is the case at all other airports (except in Israel).

Just to update. The vending machines are gone and probably would have been difficult to get to from where the El Al terminal is. They have been gone for a while, apparently.
All those eateries in the terminal and not a single vegetarian or kosher one? Terrible oversight.
Good thing we had some nosh to tide us over.

    Thanks for the update, Esti.
We kosher eaters have a really tough time at airports (… and a lot of places, really).
Would love to see better options at more national transportation centers in the future.
    Thanks!
