After nearly a decade, Skittles are no longer under hashgacha (kosher supervision) in Europe. For years, you could travel, or at least stop over, at a European destination and buy Skittles (as long as they were made in Ireland or England). No more.
Growing up traditional, I ate the non-kosher Skittles, among other candies and dairy non-kosher products. Skittles were the last thing I stopped eating when I became kosher. One day in college, a friend came back from London with a huge plastic jug of the colorful candy… “They’re Kosher across the pond,” he announced. My days of waiting were over.
About two months ago my wife and I traveled through Amsterdam where I picked up another jug-o-Skittles. I am slowly going through the very last kosher versions of my favorite candy.
I know that this post is very food centric and kind of sounds pro fat-kid, but I will truly miss the taste of that rainbow.
