Would you let someone shoot you with a puke ray?

puke_ray.jpgSharon Weinberger has written an article for Wired’s Danger Room about her experience as the subject of a test involving a Sonic Blaster at a Jeruslaem hotel.

Sharon’s reaction when she first heard about the less-lethal weapon’s existence was “A puke ray? An honest-to-God puke ray? Right here in Jerusalem?” I have to say that my reaction would have been the same, but Sharon went a few steps further than I would dare. She contacted Dr. Maurice Goldman, a retired dentist who is the designer of Inferno, and arranged a demonstration of the device’s effect which is supposed to induce wonderful sensations such as “vertigo, nausea, and pain in the chest.”

Here is how Sharon described the experience: “I’m not sure words can do justice to what can only be described as the most unbearable, gut-wrenching noise I’ve ever heard in my life.”

One of the more interesting facts about this device is that in a day and age where you can have a hard time getting a laptop battery onto an airplane, Dr. Goldman has had “few, if any problems, boarding aircraft” with the device.

The real question concerning the Inferno’s future seems to be a question of how much of an extra “deterrent effect” it offers over just a very loud noise. Either way, I would be proud to own anything that I could rightfully call a “puke ray.”

Anyone wanna buy me an early birthday present?
