Spitzer’s Fall an Israeli Plot?
In an event of staggering proportions, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned in disgrace last week in the wake of a prostitution scandal. News like this hasn’t rocked the country since…well, since the last time a tri-state area governor resigned in disgrace. Okay, maybe not such staggering proportions after all.
Spitzer was one of the highest ranking Jews in American government, rivaled only by figures like Senators Chuck Schumer and Joseph Lieberman. Until the scandal broke last Monday, there was a fair chance that Spitzer would eventually become America’s first Jewish President. Now that path has changed forever, and the investigation revealed that an Israeli citizen named Mark Brener was at the heart of the prostitution ring associated with the fall of Eliot Spitzer.
What’s that you say? An American Jew in a high government office? An Israeli? Let the cry of conspiracy ring forth throughout the land!
Yes, that’s right, those two elements were all that were needed to start the wild speculation running. Based on no evidence of any kind, the rumor is being spread that Spitzer was caught up in a Mossad operation. It seems that to certain parties, every Israeli is a government agent, every crime they commit an act of espionage. They are apparently so “addicted to surveillance and penetration inside our society and institutions” that they are willing to become involved in the sexual entrapment and blackmail of prominent Americans. This sinister Israeli plot is supposed to have extended so far as to include massive money laundering on the part of the Mossad, and Mark Brener is described as part of a possible “sleeper-cell.” There is even the implication that the Justice Department is covering the truth when it claims the investigation began based on a report of suspicious financial transactions on Spitzer’s part (though for the life of me I can’t see what the Justice Department has to gain by covering for supposed spies).
Personally, my favorite part of this “article” is the fact that the author used his own site’s Executive Editor as a “source.” That’s a trick I’ve never seen pulled before, interviewing your own staff and calling their speculation “news.” So much for journalistic integrity. It seems that some people have never heard of Occam’s Razor. When you hear hooves, sometimes it’s zebras, or giraffes. Usually, though, it’s horses. Perhaps sometimes a sex scandal does mean international espionage. But I’m willing to bet that most of the time, when an arrogant, powerful person is brought down for prostitution, the only thing behind it is sex.
