A New Shabbos Experience

Tom's Restaurant (112th & Broadway)

I am about to make Shabbos in a place where I have never been before, yet I have been here a million times during the week. The Upper West Side of Manhattan is busy, loud, expensive and very Jewish. There are plenty of kosher restaurants and tons of young singles mulling about. Walking around Manhattan on Shabbos won’t be different than any other day, it will be just as busy and loud as a normal day and probably won’t have that warm Shabbos tingly feeling. I also have to climb fifteen flights of stairs. I wonder how much like other communities this will feel like. Kids aren’t going to be playing in the street and there is no eruv.

I’ll report back after. I am excited. It happens to smell fanastic where I am staying….

Since my wife and I got married, we have been invited out for shabbat every week. This week my mother in law came to town, and stayed with us. We made shabbat for the first time in 7 months. We finally used our crockpot, and challa board, and other things we arent going to use for another 7 months or so. We had a great time ( we taught my mother in law how to play poker and then she kicked our butts. I hope you had a good time on the upper west side. From what I remember of spending shabbat there, as long as you know a few people in the building it wont be too boring.

The UWS was very nice. While it did lack a certain Shabbos feeling, our hosts made up for it with a warm environment packed with tasty food, great conversations, and new friends.
