Buffalo Meat Alert
This week a Kashrus Alert was distributed regarding Solomon’s Bison Meat after a distributor in Antioch, IL noticed that the OU certification was labeled on the front of the packaging but not on the internal cryovac packaging. He also noticed that the packaging had changed from a clear plastic palate to a black Styrofoam plate. After noticing these differences, the distributor in Antioch called Solomon’s, who provides the meat to the distributors. Solomon’s said that they had not been the ones to package the meat and so the processing plant in South Dakota was contacted.
The plant in South Dakota claimed that the packaging was different because the meat came from the hind quarter of the animal rather then from the front end, and that the meat was kosher nonetheless. Further investigation proved that this was not true and that the error had occurred because the packaging company had accidentally been provided with the OU labeled boxes. Because of the minor differences in packaging, the mistake went unnoticed for months. Rabbi Fishbane, Head of the OU Kosher Supervision, says that he went out to the plant and found that Solomon’s was in no way culpable for this error.
If you have purchased Solomon’s Bison Meat, do not eat it. There will be a notification put out once the meat is once again safe to eat.
If you have used Solomon’s Meat in the last 6 months, there are certain procedures that should be followed.
Rabbi Shwartz, head of the CRC, holds that dishes need Haggalah, and you can kasher Teflon instruments by using them at a high heat. This is relevant to anyone who cooked using a Forman Grill.
Rabbi Benzion Twerski of Wisconsin K says that you cannot kasher a Foreman Grill or anything like a Foreman (i.e Teflon instruments or sandwich makers) but he also holds that the dishes don’t need to be kashered again anyway.
