Hamas Attack Leaves Sedrot Without Electricity

Qassam Rocket in Israel

Hamas terrorists fired a barrage of short-range Qassam rockets at the southern Israeli town of Sderot today. The attack resulted in the destruction of a high-tension power line, leaving a majority of the city and its 24,000 residents without electricity. One woman suffered moderate injuries from shrapnel after her home was directly struck by a Qassam rocket. Two other residents were treated for smoke inhalation.

Mari Ochana, a 59-year-old resident of Sderot, said, “I am scared to leave my home. We feel vulnerable to more rocket attacks.”

Since the beginning of 2008, more than 500 rockets and mortars have been fired by Palestinian terrorists from Gaza. There have been 13 casualties and over 300 injuries as a result of these attacks. There were than 2,300 rockets and mortar shells fired from Gaza at Israeli in 2007. Despite this, electricity from Israel’s central grid continues to flow uninterrupted to the Gaza Strip. On average, Israel supplies between 100-120 megawatts of electricity to Gaza, approximately 65 % of its energy requirements.

Hamas is a terrorist organization that seeks the destruction of Israel seized control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007.

King Abdallah II of Jordan has stated that the leaders of Hamas “take their directives from Teheran.”
