Jewish Geography and Social Networking

LinkedIn

Facebook

MySpace

I have had the pleasure of living in many different cities in my life time. 3 countries, 2 continents, 5 Yeshivas, and as any good American I only speak English well, but as a good Jew does I can play Jewish Geography with the best of them. Someone’s uncle usually ate at my dad’s restaurant in Israel, and I went to school with a stranger’s cousin in Israel. That’s the beauty of our culture. Now with the innovation of the internet, specifically social networking sites we can keep track of and keep in touch with the people we run across.

There is a ridiculous list of different sites from Linkedin (for business) to Facebook (for general friends) to Myspace (for your 12 year old sister) and hundreds of other sites (twitter, plaxo, flicker, ryze, xing, ect, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg). Now you can find a friend of a friend who you may know, and you can connect, poke, or even superpoke someone. (I got body slammed online last week.) I think it’s fantastic that the world is learning how to play Jewish geography. On Facebook there is a widget called “Friend Wheel” where it will show you who is connected to whom within your friends. Or on Linkedin you can see who else is connected to the same person and what connections you share. I would love to meet the old computer yenta that is coming up with this stuff. If you need help figuring out how to use these functions let me know. I would love to hear how you use these sites for business or fun.

Dave Weinberg says:

Linked in is an amazing phenomenon in the online social networking world. It has really grown, kept fully serious, and yet remains fun and accessible. There are several Jewish groups on each of the above sites. Please post their links if you want others to join. I know of the FrumNnetwork which exists both on LinkedIn and on Doostang (but I don’t know the links to join…sorry).

Feel free to connect to me on LinkedIn - http://www.linkedin.com/in/dweinberg

If you want to join the FrumNetwork mentioned above by Dave, click on the link to his profile and click on the group logo. That will send a request to join the group. There are many other groups to join, so check out the list of groups based on Alumni, Geography, Company or other things.
Also if you want to link with me, feel free.
