Jewish Orthodox Bronx School Principal on Today Show
What used to be one of the most violent schools in the tri-state area had been quickly transformed into an A+ school by the determined principal, Shimon Waronker, a Lubavitcher Chassid. Citing Hashem, the students and parents as key to the process, Waronker has played a key role is retaking the school. Speaking Spanish as his native tongue and growing up in similar situations, Waronker knows what his students go through every day and feels a special kinship to them. Born in South America, Waronker was raised in Maryland, fought in the Marines and then went on to become a school principal.
Junior High School 22 is his first job, and no one could say he’s had it easy. The school had gone through “6 previous principals in just over two years,” notes the New York Times in their recent highlight of Waronker.
“My first day, the police were arresting a student for assault and calling in for backup,” says Waronker during his Today Show interview.
“This is an incredible Kiddush Hashem,” notes one Maryland resident in a community wide email blast.
