Questions from the Non Jews
As vice president of the Touro Law JLSA (Jewish Law Students Association), it is my duty to plan events around the holidays, or even just for the education of those students who are not Jewish. We have had many events such as lunch/dinner in the Sukkah (see previous post for pictures), Grill the Rabbi BBQ, Channukah Lighting, Learn with the Rabbi, Lunch and Learn, and many more. At many of these events - specifically the Grill the Rabbi BBQ, the Channukah Lighting and the Learn with the Rabbi - the presence of non-Jews was felt. Many of them were more inquisitive and eager to learn about the ways of the Jews than those Jewish students who just didn’t know. Is there a reason why they want to know more than the students who are actually Jewish (even only nominally)? After thinking about it for a while, the only reason I could come up with is that people don’t want to know about what they have, but about what others have, like a “grass is greener on the other side” kind of thing. It does, however, bring some satisfaction to me to know that in this day and age, even with everything going on, people can be open minded about Jews and not only listen to the negatives they are being taught about Judaism, but what is really there. The world has come a long way!
