Thinking about G-d

“Do you really think G-d exists?” (curious)
“No.”
“Excuse me?” (bewildered)
“What?”
“I just asked you if you think G-d exists and you said ‘No.’”
“So?”
“But you’re a Rabbi, and an Orthodox Jew; how can you not think G-d exists?”
“Why did you ask me if you already know the answer?”
“So you do think that G-d exists?”
“No.”
“Are you kidding me?” (unsure)
“No.”
“This is crazy. Have you told anyone else this?”
“No.”
“Wow …” (shocked)
“Let me ask you: Do you think G-d exists?”
“Yes, sometimes.”
“I doubt that.”
“You … what? Who are you to doubt that?” (angry)
“I just do.”
“You are crazy, you know that?”
“Maybe. Let me ask you to do something. I want you to relax for a moment and quiet your thoughts. Just breathe in deeply and breathe out and relax and then for a moment, just a moment, don’t think.”
“O.K., I’m breathing, relaxing …it’s not so easy. I had maybe a second where I stopped thinking, and then a thought came up …”
“That’s O.K. But you had a second without thought?”
“Yes.”
“During that second that you weren’t thinking, did G-d exist?”
“Well …yes, I would have to say He did.”
“So there you have it; even when you aren’t thinking, G-d exists.”
“I’m not sure I follow you.” (confused)
“You asked me if I think G-d exists. I said no, because even when I don’t think, G-d exists. He just is, whether I think or not. In fact, I’m most likely to be aware of his existence when I’m not thinking.”
“So you do think G-d exists!” (triumphant)
“Oy.” (exasperated)

A very cute and enlightening lesson! It addresses the heavy question of ‘whether G-d exists’ (something many of us ponder) in a non-threatening, simple and comfortable manner. I love reading it in ’script form’.
I enjoyed it!
