Tri-Colored Snoopy Takes Best of Show At Westminster

Snoopy

As a lifelong dog lover I always look forward to the Super Bowl of Dogdom, the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York. For two nights I sit fascinated in front of my television watching beautiful pure-bred dogs go round and round a ring, showing their style, demonstrating the diversity and variety that is the show dog business. I always enjoy seeing breeds of canines I have never seen in real life. (What’s up with that Mexican hairless thing?)

As always, I appreciate all the work and care that goes into showing these premier and expensive dogs. It was delightful that a small, plain 15 inch beagle named, Ono, took home BEST OF SHOW. He is a dog for “every man.” He is a remembered pal from childhood, a spunky tri-colored Snoopy. I was cheering for him, as was the audience who gave the win a standing ovation.

As enjoyable as this event is, it should be cheered for something more important that was highlighted throughout the two evenings, the plight of shelter dogs. Westminster was sponsored by a dog food company that donated money to shelters and rescue programs and continually showed commercials trumpeting the cause of the millions of dogs that need homes.

I write this review with an endorsement of mutts everywhere. If you are looking for a great pet and want to do a mitzvah (tzar balay chayim) then go to your local shelter or check out the breed rescue sites to find your dog. Our two dog are from Lab Rescue. They are lab mixes, not put bred, not fancy, but incredible companions. Even though I can appreciate the wonders of the champion dogs of Westminster, I believe my good-hearted, loveable, mutts are true winners in our home.

Benji Rosenzweig says:

Don’t they do a “best in show” award at the end of every episode of “the View”?

Zechariah Mehler says:

Benji, why would you know anything about the View?

Benji Rosenzweig says:

Dude, It’s a joke. I actually heard that joke on Howard Stern. Man do I love making fun of the view, (just don’t tell my wife)
