We Are Legion: An appeal from a Jewish Anonymous

Yesterday (February 10th, 2008) marked the first protest against the Church Of Scientology by the cyber activist group Anonymous. Taking place at over 150 locations in 8 different countries, the rally was an astounding example of nonviolent protest and proved that a movement can be mobilized by a call to arms broadcast over YouTube.
In the wake of their success, Anonymous has announced that there will be a second day of protest on March 15th, just two days after L. Ron Hubbard’s birthday, which is a celebrated day for Scientologists.
To say that I am an Anonymous supporter is an understatement. Because I have family that lives in Clearwater, FL (the Jerusalem of Scientology), I have been very tapped into the conflict with Scientology since I was a little kid and have always found myself very disturbed by the Church of Scientology’s behavior. Long before Tom Cruise began to go insane and South Park brought Scientology to the forefront of mainstream media, my friends and I have been outspoken critics of the Scientology movement. We also host a radio program called Dead Air on which we have discussed, debated and even pranked Scientology. With all the recent events surrounding this conflict, I am encouraged by the strength of the vox populi that has arisen.
Since I want to do my part, I am eager to attend rallies but unfortunately the next rally is on Saturday and being a Sabbath Observant Orthodox Jew, I will be unable to attend the protest on March 15th. I can’t really blame Anonymous for picking such an auspicious date to hold their next demonstration. I just hope that in the future Anonymous will keep in mind that there are some of us who want very much to support the cause but have religious constraints that keep them from attending Saturday events.
Despite my inability to attend, I will still do what I can in support of the Anonymous campaign. Dead Air will continue to broadcast news of the events that surround this conflict and hopefully we will see support grow as more people join our cause.

i can’t believe you didn’t get the Ides of March concept. March 15th is the day when tyrants should be nervous - Anonymous has picked it because of what the day represents in the minds of the oppressed.
Or, it could be just a coincidence and I’m a huge nerd.

Thats what I meant by “auspicious date”. Next time I will be more literal.

Excellent post, Zechariah! I stumbled across this site and have been covering the Scientology protests on my blog on StumbleUpon.
Moshe Glasser makes a very astute point!
The “Ides of March” are indeed upon us and, as a matter of fact, my friends and I will be hosting an artshow on that very evening.
I’m sorry it falls on a Saturday, hence making it an impossibility for you to attend, but I look forward to following the fantastic updates on this site!

Thank you so much for your thought provoking article!

As you very well know, Scientology has an “Attack the Attackers” mentality where they attack and take out in any way they can their opposition. Is there some sort of security at these protests?
Zechariah Mehler says:
Attack the Attackers is a method by which the Church of Scientology investigates the people that criticize their organization. Though they have been accused of physically attacking people they do so in private where the burden of proof is directed at the victim. A rally is way too open a forum for Scientologists to threaten any Anonymous protesters. Regardless there are always a group of police that are present at ANY rally.
