Young Geeks gather in Israel

Israelis are full of ideas. The Silicon Wadi is only behind the Silicon Valley in terms of sheer numbers startups. One guy, Shai Agassi, is working on a viable electric car, hoping to make Israel (and the rest of the world) no longer dependent on oil.

But this summer, this same guy was the Chief Scientist at eCamp Israel. The place where young Jewish geeks go to spend their summer creating, learning, networking, and a million other things I am sure. Reports that I have gotten from the inside have been amazing. Seriously, the toys that I saw them playing with in their video makes me want to lie next year and say that I am only 16. (I probably can pull it off…)

It was co-founded by Nir Kouris, a young Israeli entrepreneur, and Dotan Tamir, who were set on introducing the Israeli and Diaspora youth to the resources of Israel. And by resources, introducing them to the people who are actually starting up startups, as well as those who have made it really big. (Think ICQ.)

Not all the ideas that the geek-campers are working on are in order to become gazillionaires: In eCamp Israel, there is a deep importance for a “Technology Tikkun Olam”, using technology to help solve global problems that affect our world.

Check out the videos on YouTube put up already by the a/v geeks… I mean the video lab workshop.

There is only problem that I can fathom right now. We are not going to be able to gauge the true success of eCamp Israel for a long time.

Wow, how things have changed. I think this is great. This is investing in the future of Israeli creativity and economical success, not to mention the good PR it gives. Education has to be central for Israeli children. Education offers direction…
